RPL Driving At The Essex Young Drivers Scheme

Written on 24 Jun 2010, 09:52 AM

Last month was the first day that I was out teaching at the Essex Young Drivers Scheme. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone aged 16 (or 15 if there is space) who would be interested in getting some driving experience before starting driving lessons when they turn 17.

The lessons are run on a closed industrial estate, about halfway between Braintree and Colchester, on the 3rd Sunday of every month with a group of fully qualified Driving Instructors from all over Essex.

For more information, and to register visit the YDS website.

Taxi Bouncers To Start In Chelmsford

Written on 07 Jun 2009, 08:39 AM

After several incidents in the town centre, a 6 month trial scheme
will be starting in June at the Baddow Road taxi rank.

Between 11pm and 4am, two licenced 'taxi marshalls' will man the taxi
rank during the peak times for drunken arguements and fights. Their
job is to make sure that there is a fair queue, with everyone waiting
their turn, and to ensure any drunken behaivour is kept under control.
Also, they provide reassurance, as taxi ranks can feel a bit lonely at
3am.

After several attacks on taxi drivers, these plans have met a good
response from the Chelmsford cabbies. A similar idea in Romford has
been running since 2002, with the help of other measures, had cut
night time violence by 25%.

I look forward to seeing how well it works in Chelmsford

Scrappage Scheme

Written on 07 Jun 2009, 08:38 AM

This month, the governement has introduced a new 'scrappage scheme' to get some older vehicles off the road, and to boost sales of the struggling car industry. Overall, this scheme will cost £300 million, which will allow enough money for 300,000 new cars.

The plan is to offer £2,000 to anyone who trades in a car older than 10 years, for a brand new car. This £2,000 is made up from £1,000 from the government fund, and £1,000 from the motor industry. It's expected to run till Febuary next year, or until the fund money runs out.

To qualify for the discount the car you are trading in must:

- Be at least 10 years old (first registered before 31st August 1999)
- Have been owned by the current owner for at least 12 months
- Must be registered to a UK address
- Must have a valid MOT, and no outstanding finance

This scheme is completely voluntary, but like most things, if one dealer starts i... Read more
