• Nice food, shame about the service

  This was a special birthday meal for my mother of 78, we had been recommended to the restaurant so thought we'd give it a try. We were welcomed at the door by a young lady opening the door for us, things were looking good. We were a little early so were shown to a seat and offered drinks. Then another young girl arrived and asked if we would like olives to nibble with our wine, nice touch BUT when we received the bill we had been charged £3 for the olives, oh dear!! Had we known we'd have eaten more than the three we ate. When shown to the table we had to pull it away from the wall ourselves while the waiter stood and watched!! Oh Dear!! Food was very nice and reasonably priced. BUT, the waiters reached across our faces to serve Mum sitting opposite rather than walk around the table to serve at her side. We were not offered water, we had to wave a waitress down. We had to ask for salt and pepper, we noticed none of the tables had them. As soon as we had used them they took them away!! What's that about? On receiving the bill for £84.90 we put £90 in cash on the table intending to wait for the change and top it up for the tip. We never got any change!! They just took their own tip!! They didn't know, I guess, that they would have got more if only they had given us our change. We certainly didn't add any more. To sum up, Food 9/10. Service 5/10. The staff had clearly not been trained to the level required for a restaurant that was aiming at a more discerning clientele. They tried but were too young and inexperienced. I would not go back for a special occasion meal because of the poor service but would probably give it another try for a midweek dinner.
